African American History And Culture Museum
The National Museum of African American History and Culture is devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American history and culture. The Museum was established in 2003 but opened its doors in September 2016 with a rich collection of more than 37,000 objects. The Museum is the 19th and newest addition to the Smithsonian Institution. Learn about the richness and diversity of African American history, culture, and life experiences.
Some of the famous objects on display are Harriet Tubman's hymnal; works by prolific artists such as Charles Alston, Michael Jackson's fedora; Nat Turner’s bible; works from Elizabeth Catlett, Henry O. Tanner, Guard tower from Angola Prison; and a plantation cabin from South Carolina. The National Museum of African American History and Culture is located in Washington DC. Entry to the museum is free but because of popular demand you have to request a day pass in advance. This can be done online or through the phone up to 3 months prior to your visit.
