Bay of Kotor
Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor is an awe-inspiring corner of Europe characterized by dramatic mountain peaks, hill top villages, medieval architecture, museums, old churches, narrow alley-ways with cute cafes, and town squares. Kotor, which is the main city, is surrounded by walls built by Venetians to protect the city from invaders, the walls stretch about five kilometers through steep hills and rocky terrain. This medieval town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its rich history and culture as well as its position.
The area is made of four bays strung next to each other forming the shape of a butterfly, you can still see Venetian palaces and other century old buildings existing next to modern structures. Kotor gives the impression of being stuck between two worlds, the past and the present. The city has hundreds of cats resting in the marble laneways, at night Kotor lights up like a beacon of light, street bars, castle- top night clubs, live music and every kind of buzz can be found here.
The bay is surrounded by small charming waterside towns with towering peaks and a rocky coastline. The warm Mediterranean climate makes it easy to explore its hidden treasures all year round. Kotor has everything you can expect from a medieval town and more, from Venetian-style churches to stairs leading to the top of hills, colorful flowers in pots at every corner, and little cafés tucked in hills away from tourists.
