Belize Blue Hole
The Belize Blue Hole is the largest sea hole in the world, niched in the Caribbean Sea, Belize is a charming strip of land with a stunning coastline and the world’s second largest barrier reef. Within this barrier reef is the famous Great Blue Hole, a fascinating giant sinkhole 124 metres deep and millions of years old.
This mind blowing geological phenomenon is surrounded by a ring of coral in a perfect circle that leaves experts in complete awe. The Great Blue Hole has been nicknamed ‘’the world’s eye’’ and many ships have sailed it trying to understand it. For example the Legendary Calypso led by French marine biologist Jacques Cousteau who documented the Blue Hole in 1971 and concluded it was among the world’s top scuba diving sites.
A cave was discovered 50 metres into the hole, a 46 metres long tunnel with skeletons of sea creatures was found underneath the Great Blue Hole making it all the more intriguing. Divers get to explore the thousands of stalactites and stalagmites found in the Blue Hole formed some 10,000 years ago during the great ice age. If that’s not enough reason to go to Belize then know that the Discovery Channel ranked it in 2012, the #1 most amazing place on Earth, the Belize Blue Hole is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Charles Darwin declared it the “most remarkable coral reefs” in the entire Caribbean after visiting Belize in 1836.
