Big Ben
Close your eyes and think of London. The chances are your mind will drift to the capital’s famous golden clock tower: Big Ben.
Big Ben has towered over Westminster since 1859, standing on the River Thames as part of the Houses of Parliament. It’s iconic bong brings in the New Year to the tens of thousands of people lining the riverbank and nothing says “I’m in London” more than seeing a red bus drive across Westminster bridge in the foreground. Get up close and personal by gazing up at Big Ben from Parliament Square, or head to Trafalgar Square to see it sparkling in the distance, behind another London icon, Nelson’s column.
Its golden exterior is currently covered with scaffolding for essential repairs, but don’t worry; it will be back to normal in 2021!
