Fairytale Chimneys of Cappadocia
Famous for its many hot air balloons that you can see floating on the city skyline, Cappadocia is a slice of paradise on earth. This surreal city is nestled in central Turkey where volcanic eruptions have created a dreamy landscape of remarkable chimney-shaped rock formations. Lava from century-old eruptions has resulted in cave-like structures with hills, cliffs and pointy heads like chimneys.
Some of these rocks are millions of years old and as the centuries unfolded natural climatic conditions, erosion, and human intervention transformed them into unique structures. No two are the same, each one having a distinctive, dramatic appearance that evokes an eerie charm equal to none.
During the rule of the Roman Empire, early Christians who were persecuted out of Rome and into Cappadocia settled in these rocks-caves. They chiseled doors and windows in them to form unimaginable structures. Some were transformed into churches and dwellings. Today, this evidence of human-rock collaboration has become a haven for cave-loving hippies. Some are also now boutique hotels, restaurants and shops. Cappadocia is truly magical and surreal, everyone has its own shape and size, you simply never know what to expect with these ‘’hoodoos’’ or “fairy-chimneys' ' as they are popularly called, and that alone is reason enough to visit the magical city of Cappadocia.
