Florence's Duomo
Named after Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence's cathedral which is also known as the Duomo is a magnificent Renaissance Gothic church. It was built in the 7th century by famous architect Filippo Brunelleschi, the cathedral towers the city’s skyline and its majestic dome stands tall for all to see. The Duomo of Santa Maria del Fiore is a major landmark of the Florentine skyline, with decades of history and a rich cultural heritage, this architectural masterpiece is more than just its beauty.
The church took about 140 years to finish and it is said to be the third biggest church in the world with dimensions of 153 meters (502 ft) long, 90 meters wide (295 ft) and 115 meters (376 ft) high. The dome is the highlight of the construction with measurements of about 40 meters (130 ft) in diameter. The Duomo is visible from anywhere in the city, it stands out in front of the beautiful panorama.
