Freemantle Railway Station
On March 1st, 1881, the Cliff Street location of the first Fremantle station opened at the end of the Eastern Railway's route to Guildford via Perth. When the line was extended to Kalgoorlie in 1896, the Eastern Railway gained significance as a hub for gold miners traveling to the Yilgarn and Eastern Goldfields after arriving in Western Australia by ship.
To better serve the newly built Fremantle Harbour, a new station and marshaling yards were built 300 meters to the north-east on the site of the former Fremantle Railway Workshops.
