Glow Worms In New Zealand
The Waitomo Caves in New Zealand offer some of the best Glow worms experience, located about three hours from Auckland, these caves are the habitat of thousands of small creatures that light up the caves like fireworks.
Though commonly called glow worms they are actually known as Arachnocampa luminosa, they live in dark and damp places such as caves, the banks of lakes, and forests. They glow even in the day because their habitat is always dark.
New Zealand’s species of glow worms can be spotted in Te Anau and Waitomo, these caves that are dark, damp, with no wind make the perfect environment for glow worms to thrive. The caves can be accessed through an underground boat ride, night hiking trips, and guided kayaking expeditions. Such trips are mostly done at night to be able to immerse yourself in the full glory of the glowing blue-green lights of these mysterious and magnificent creatures. Watching glow worms light up the roof of these caves like a thousand stars in the sky as you sail past them is a magical experience bound to knock your socks off.
