Hagia Sophia
A true architectural masterpiece that bears witness to centuries past and how they affected this part of the world, the Hagia Sophia stands proud as a fascinating piece of Ottoman history. Originally commissioned as a church, then converted to a mosque, and now declared a museum, this display of architectural genius exudes rich religious history and extraordinary beauty.
Hagia Sophia’s awe-inspiring craftsmanship is revealed in every minute detail, from its gold and silver-plated ornaments to the coloured stone mosaics, and the terracotta and glass with 6th-century floral motifs. One of the highlights of this place is an 8th-century depiction of Mother Mary with the child Jesus in her arms, surrounded by Archangels Gabriel and Michael, it is simply a must-see.
Hagia Sophia is also famous for its majestic gates, called the Imperial Gate, the Beautiful Gate ( or Splendid Door), and the Marble Gate. These gates are all surrounded by 104 magnificent columns. The Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque on its part stands tall with breathtaking domes that seem to be floating in the air. To crown it all, this masterpiece of religious and architectural history is located at the tip of a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the Sea of Marmara, making it all the more regal.
