Hamelin Pool Stromatolites
Hamelin Pool stromatolites are a unique type of rock formation found in Western Australia. These stromatolites are created by layers of microbial mats, which are made up of blue-green algae and other microorganisms.
These microbial mats grow on top of each other, creating a layered structure that is preserved over time as the stromatolite. These stromatolites are considered to be some of the oldest living fossils on Earth, with some estimated to be over 3.5 billion years old.
