Kailash
Kailash Range, also called Gangdisê Range, is one of the highest and most rugged parts of the Himalayas, located in the southwestern part of Tibet. The range is surrounded in the west by the Langqên River, in the east by the Damqog River. In its middle lies Lake Mapam, which is the highest freshwater lake in the world, at 4,557 metres above sea level. Mount Kailash is of great spiritual importance to the Hindus, who believe it is the paradise of Shiva, the Tibetan Buddhists who consider it to be Mount Sumeru, the cosmic centre of the universe. As a result of its religious significance, Mount Kailash has never been climbed by alpinists.
Following a thousands years tradition, Hindus and Buddhists pilgrims go on a 52 km clockwise trek around Mount Kailash in a holy ritual to bring good fortune. The pilgrims believe "Only a man entirely free of sin could climb Kailash’’. And that is why all those who have tried so far have failed. Considering how rugged and untouched Mount Kailash is, it's needless to say how jaw-dropping the landscapes here are.
