He chose this secluded mountain region to implant the center of his religion. Today a community with several temples have sprung in the area, it is also a popular spot for pilgrims, especially the Shikoku 88 Temple. Koyasan is surrounded by 1000m-high mountains and it runs 2 km north-south and 4 km east-west in the Kansai region.

Construction of the first temple began in 826 and since then over one hundred temples have been built all around Koyasan. Though the original temple known as Kongobuji still remains the most prominent and the seat of Shingon Buddhism. Kobo Daishi's mausoleum is also another famous place in this village. Check out the Ichi no hashi bridge, the “Danjo Garan (Sacred Temple)”, or the tombstones of thousands of Buddhist monks and Samurai. Visitors can spend a few days experiencing the life of a monk, with daily prayers, meditation, vegetarian meals, and other activities available to pilgrims and tourists.
