Lake Malawi
Also known as Lake Nyasa or the Lake of Stars because of the reflection of the stars on the water, Lake Malawi is a natural haven of golden beaches, clear waters, tropical fish, and tiny picturesque Islands. Located between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, the lake covers a surface area of 29,600 square kilometers with a depth of 706 meters which makes it the second deepest lake in Africa and sixth in the world. It also covers one-fifth of Malawi which means most of it is in Malawi.
What is mind blowing about Lake Malawi is that it is classified as a meromictic lake, this means a lake where the water layers do not mix. Lake Malawi has three layers, with three different densities and temperatures. This lake has been intriguing scientists for decades and that’s not about to change. In addition to its rich biodiversity, it contains 30% of the world’s cichlid species and a variety of unique freshwater fish.
Go snorkelling, swimming, scuba diving, boat riding, water skiing, or kayaking on the awesome blue waters of the lake or simply admire the view from one of the many resorts on the shores of the lake. Take a day trip to one of its Islands, for example Likoma or Chizumulu Islands, relish in the amazing sights and sounds and see for yourself why it is a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site.
