Northern Territory
Stretching across a mammoth 1.42 MILLION kmĀ² of northern Australia, the Northern Territory (or NT) is perhaps the country's wildest, most unforgiving state. Life is a bit different at the 'Top End' - Colossal road trains dominate lonely red roads, the relentless sun bakes the back of huge lizards such as the Perentie Lizard, and Do Not Swim Here signs are not to be ignored unless you want the chance to wrestle a croc!
But despite the blistering heat, there is a stunning array of things to keep you occupied in the NT. Litchfield and Kakadu national parks provide cooling rock pools and crashing waterfalls, Darwin offers a laid back, but no less exciting, alternative to the busy capitals of the other states and, of course, Uluru and Kata Tjuta will thrill even the most jaded Australian traveller.
So many visitors miss out the Northern Territory to seek out the beaches of the East Coast or sophistication of the cities in the south - make sure you're not one of them, and you won't regret it!
