Red Square
Regarded as one of the most iconic squares in Europe, the Red Square is of great historic significance to Russia and the whole of Eastern Europe, making it a bucket-list item. Located next to the Kremlin and other famous buildings in Moscow, this iconic landmark hosts thousands of visitors every day from across the globe. The Red Square used to be a slum with lots of criminals, peddlers and drunks who had no place in the heart of the city.
It was later cleared and named Trinity Square, after a nearby church. Later it became known as 'Fire Square' because of the number of executions and fires that burned in medieval Moscow. Wars were fought there and cannons always stood ready in defense at the square. Today, it is famous for being the site of military parades, and official state ceremonies hosted by the Kremlin.
