The Abu Simbel Temples
One of the most recognisable sites in Egypt, The Abu Simbel Temples. Built-in 1244 B.C, and for 3000 years sat on the bank of the Nile river until it was threatened in the 1960s with plans to make way for the Aswan High Dam. Thankfully instead of being destroyed, it was remarkably able to be shifted through excellent engineering, and placed on higher ground. The historic masterpiece can now be admired, and if you visit on the days that are believed to be the dates of pharaoh's coronation and birth, October 22nd and February 22nd, the sunbeams into the inner sanctuary lighting up the three statues seated on a bench - a sensational sight to witness!
