The Churches Of Tigray
The region of the Tigray has over 120 churches hewn in rocks and caves dating back to 1600 years ago. Decorated with murals of ancient relics and paintings, this region has a rich cultural heritage that has stood the test of time. The region of Gheralta is absolutely stunning with dramatic cliffs, steep mountains and hilltops, sandy deserts with local shepherds dressed in all white and camels carrying loads from one village to the other.
One of the famous churches is at Abuna Yemata Guh, situated at a height of over 1000 ft; you have to climb 30 ft stretches of hard rock to get to the top!
You can climb bare or ask your guide to bring a harness or a rope for extra support.
The Ancient Rock Churches Of Tigray offers a unique opportunity to hike some of the most scenic cliffs you’ll ever come across. Stop at Megab, a small town along the way to refuel, then venture into the rocky terrain. Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor are other rock churches in the region with jaw-dropping scenery of ancient rocks of over 7000 ft. You have to take off your shoes for the climb and cover your head to get into the church as a sign of respect.
