The Danakil Depression
A jaw-dropping geological wonder that lies at the junction of three tectonic plates, the Danakil Depression is a mystery even to scientists. Located about 200 km into the Afar Region of Ethiopia, the Danakil Depression is believed to have occurred as the result of African and Asian continents moving apart. It is the hottest spot on earth with boiling temperatures. Danakil is a mix of volcanic activity and erosion on sedimentary rocks like limestone, sandstone.
If that’s not enough to make you want to explore it, then it should be noted that the Danakil Depression is believed to be the cradle of humanity, the exact spot where the human species first evolved. Fossils of Lucy, the famous Australopithecus dating back 3.2 million years, were discovered here in 1974.
At the Danakil Depression, you will explore Mount Ayalu, an active volcano, Erta Ale, one of the many bubbling crater lakes, the Dallol sulphur springs, and an extraterrestrial landscape that will take your breath away.
