The Romantic Rhine

By theleaf.app On 03 Feb 2022

The is a region that Rhine crosses through the Rhenish Slate Mountain between Rüdesheim and Koblenz, Germany. It features mountains that melt through hillside palaces and steep grape fields. It is Germany's most spectacular landscape encompassing everything from forested hillsides with rolling cliffs and almost vertical terraced vineyards. Each curve has Idyllic villages, half wooden houses and steep Gothic churches seemingly plucked from a fairy tale.

With medieval castles that used to be owned by local barons, politicians, princes and even bishops, many of which were restored in the 19th century by French and Louis XIV forces. It was famous among German poets, British painters who got inspiration from the beauty of the region. This 65 km riverbank, known as the upper Mittelrotal valley, was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2002.

The Rhine countryside greatly sparked interest from 18th century romantics who wanted to paint its untouched beauty, its steep hills, rough valleys, bizarre rocks and fairy-tale castle. Lord Byron wrote travel poems on the beauty of the Rhine,
Victor Hugo described it as: “ one of the most beautiful, most pleasant and most unknown towns in the world.” Even today, poets, painters and musicians still get inspired by the natural beauty of the Rhine valley.
