Vatnajokull National Park
An area of Iceland characterised by majestic glaciers, snow peaked mountains, mysterious ice caves, rivers, epic waterfalls, icebergs, glacial lagoons, and geothermal activity, Vatnajökull National Park is a jaw-dropping natural wonder. Centered around the Vatnajökull glacier, this Unesco World Heritage site is the largest National Park in Europe. Expanding over 12,000 square kilometers, this park’s unique landscape seems so surreal. A combination of geothermal and volcanic activity over centuries has created a landscape of unbelievable beauty.
The landscape around the glacier varies greatly with glacial rivers in the north, followed by Askja, Kverkfjoll and Snaefell volcanoes, the Herdubreid mountain, the canyon of Jokulsargljufur, horseshoe-curved cliffs of Asbyrgi further north, the Dettifoss waterfall and Hljodaklettar formations all creating a mythical atmosphere that leaves travelers speechless.
Vatnajökull National Park is also home to species of reindeer and pink-footed geese.
There are lovely views from the Ring Road of Vatnajokull and the many outlying glacial tongues. The glacial tongues stretch down from the ice cap towards the ocean, affording travelers some awe-inspiring views. Visitors get to hike unforgettable trails and interact closely with these natural wonders. The park offers opportunities for ice climbing on 400-700 meters thick and over 1000 years old glaciers, snowmobiling, ATV rides, and ice cave tours.
