By theleaf.app On 03 Feb 2022

Namibia’s Etosha National Park is one of the most significant wildlife game reserves in Africa and the most popular and important national park in Namibia. The Park occupies a surface area of almost 22.912 km2 and is entirely fenced for animal safety. The park also has a salt bowl of approx. 5,000 km2 formed over two million years ago when the riverbed of the Kunene Delta dried up. Etosha means "big, white spot." in the Oshiwambo language.

Etosha Park was declared a protected area in 1907 when the region was under German rule. The park is home to over 100 species of mammals and 340 distinct bird species who solely depend on water and food from within the National Park. With 27 artificial and 5 natural water holes west of the park and 29 natural and 12 artificial water holes east of the park it is easy for visitors to spot animals as they all go to the water holes for their livelihood. At Etosha National Park, animal sightings are guaranteed unlike in other places where it is mostly based on luck.
